After two played rounds in the group stage, Benfica has 0 points while United are leading with 6 points. This will be an important game for both teams.
Benfica’s bad form
The team from Lisbon have been playing terrible since the start of the group stage. They’ve lost both of their games – against CSKA Moscow at home 1-2 and horrific away loss of 5-0 against Basel. Their last six games has seen them win, draw and lose twice.
Last weekend, they played against Olhanese in the Portuguese Cup where they won 0-1 away. The team has also been playing below their expectations in the league.
Looking at their lineup, Benfica has Andre Almeida disciplined, while Lisandro Lopez is injured. Eliseu, Jardel, Jonas and Julio Cesar’s status are still unknown as to whether they will play or not.
Manchester United’s excellent form
The Red Devils have been playing exceptionally lately in the Champion’s League. Winning against Basel at home with 3-0 after which they beat CSKA Moscow with 1-4 away.
During the weekend, United had a tough game against Liverpool in the Premier League. The match finished in a null draw. That was the team from Manchester’s first draw in seven games, in which they’ve won every single game. Fellaini, Pogba, Ibrahimovic, Rojo and Bailly are all out injured.
Benfica vs. Manchester United
The history of head-to-head games between the two teams has seen them meet nine times with the English team winning six, two draws and only one win for the Portuguese team.
The two teams met in the same group in the Champion’s League twice in a row during 2005/06 and 2006/07, it was exactly then when Benfica won their only victory while Manchester won three times.
Later in 2011, the two teams met once again in the group stage of the UCL and drew twice. Benfica will see this game as very important in their struggle to qualify for the elimination rounds of the UCL while United will want to keep their victorious streak going.
